Secrets interior designers don't want you to know

Interior designers earn a lot of money for their talents, so  it pays for them to keep up the pretence that design is a form of arcane magic or a complex science that we mere mortals could never understand.  However, if you’ve got a good imagination and an eye for what looks good, you can get a professional looking home on your own.  Here’s a few tips to help you get started that interior designers don’t want you to know:

Secrets Interior Designers Don’t Want You to Know |Tip 1: Measure Everything

The difference between professional interior design and the work of an amateur is that the professional design “just works”.  Professionals have had a lot of practice and know how to avoid gotchas such as the expensive oak internal doors they installed getting scuffed because they didn’t leave enough space next to them so they hit the dining room table every time they open.

If you’re designing your own interior, re-measure every single room twice and plan out the room using some computer software or graph paper before you buy anything.

Secrets Interior Designers Don’t Want You to Know |Tip 2: Try to Buy From One Supplier Per Product

There’s nothing worse than running out of paint or wallpaper and finding that the next batch you buy doesn’t quite match.  Try to buy all your paint, tiles, and wallpaper in one big batch (and make sure that the roll or batch number matches on each pack/roll or tin).  If you’re planning on using the same oak internal doors throughout the house, try to get them all at the same time from the same UK based oak door suppliers, and do the same for your carpets as well.

Secrets Interior Designers Don’t Want You to Know |Tip 3: Pay Attention to Lighting

Good lighting can make or break your interior design.  Small rooms that are badly lit can look even smaller, and even large room scan end up looking dingy and depressing in bad lighting conditions.  The right kind of lighting doesn’t just illuminate the room, it draws the eyes to key features, and can act like an optical illusion, making the room look more spacious than it really is.

For very small rooms, strategic use of mirrors can work well.

Secrets Interior Designers Don’t Want You to Know |Tip 4: Pick a Theme

Try to choose a theme that will run through your home – you don’t have to over-state it in every room, but having something common to each room will make it look like your home was “designed” rather than cobbled together. For example, you could pick a signature colour, or a signature material, that you will try to use as much as possible.

Secrets Interior Designers Don’t Want You to Know |Tip 5: Keep It Simple

Above all, good designers know when to stop.  There is such a thing as over design.  A successful design is one that’s simple, clear, and doesn’t get in the way.  Try not to over-do it with ornaments, overly complex colour schemes, or too many accent pieces.  Simple two-tone colour schemes work surprisingly well, and clean, clear lines are often easier on the eye than complex patterns.

Clutter will detract from any design, so if you do want to go wild with something, consider making that thing storage.
